July 2010

Since mid July we started to have some truly epic Windsurfing Days. (sorry no photos but this video gives you some idea taken same time last year, but in lighter winds)

After about 6 weeks of little wind, the first full planing sessions were much enjoyed. Skipping effortlessly across the near flat water on super efficient, light weight windsurfing gear is bliss defined. I love this as much as over-powered storm sessions which also arrived..

High tide evening sails with a light Southerly blowing across near flat water that is bath tub temperature. Drag racing friends who are so happy to be out again. Sometimes Light wind sessions are the best, where you use every trick to break the board free and keep it planing through lulls that would send a kite plummeting back to the water like a dead fly.

Then there are the Typhoons that kick in around this time and continue through into September. We have enjoyed 2 so far, both over the weekends. Though, one Saturday when we had a minor International Windsurfing Event in town, there was of course no wind. The Next day it returned with a vengeance and Amara's younger brother Kai won the local Slalom Windsurfing race as a last minute entry on borrowed windsurfing equipment.

Have been mainly using Severne Mojo 6.0 and 6.7, NCX Pro 8.0 on Starboard iSonic 111, Sonic 85 and Kode 102 for when the waves pick up. I did the best jump of my life, the Mojo gives that extra lift and hang time, so nice when it all comes together. If you have a spare 3 hours, I can tell you all about it :)

We are still having lots of flat days with light winds which are great for our Windsurfing Lessons, though sometimes new students have to sit and wait or come back when the Winds and Seas have calmed down.

The View Restaurant is receiving many guests, and the kites and windsurfers put on a show for them when the wind is blowing late into the evening.

Meanwhile in Khao Lak, Siam Surf Dogs have been giving Surf Lessons and introducing people to the 14km's of un-crowded reef breaks that are perfect for learning how to surf on SUP's. Khao Lak has been enjoying many days with 2-3ft waves, allowing new SUP surfers to get loads of rides without getting smashed by white water or having to share waves with so many local hot surfers. These photos show SiamSurfDogs author and one of my surfing teachers enjoying a Starboard Paddleboard - his blog is well worth a visit.
